Abstract:
This dataset is a record of fish distribution and life history stage of summer chinook salmon, based upon the best professional judgement of local fish biologists, as of year 2003 in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, and Idaho). These data were collected by biologists at the state fish & wildlife agencies of Washington (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife), Oregon (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) and Idaho (Idaho Department of Fish and Game). Data were then compiled by StreamNet staff into paper maps or event tables at the state level. These event tables were submitted to the StreamNet regional staff at Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commision (PSMFC) where this regional distribution coverage was created from these event tables.
All data are referenced to the PNW 1:100,000 River Reach Hydrography (http://www.streamnet.org/pnwr/pnwrhome) on the LLID-based stream routing system. |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

Data is intended for use in a variety of applications where fish distribution and activity is important.
ground condition
Data are collected at the 1:100,000 scale and only on streams that are included in the PNW reach LLID-based routing system. Generally, this includes all named streams at the 1:100,000 scale and some unnamed tributaries. Smaller tributaries that are not included in this routing system are not shown in this coverage. These data represent believed instances of fish distribution or habitat that likely supports fish distribution, and as every stream has not been fully evaluated, this is not an all-inclusive list of fish distribution in this region. Each arc included in this coverage represents a stream segment of suitable habitat currently believed to be utilized by wild, natural, and/or hatchery fish populations and/or streams where sightings of wild, natural, and/or hatchery fish have been documented.

Data were compiled by the StreamNet project (<http://www.streamnet.org>), which is administered by the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. Data were provided by Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, and Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game.
Verified that all submitted events are mapped onto this coverage by comparing a list of individual mapped events in this derivative coverage to events in the submitted event tables (used the StockID field as the unique event identifier.) Data have been verified with source maps and is considered to be accurate for general mapping and analysis but may not be precise in places. Generally, fish distribution extents may be considered accurate within approximately 1000 feet.
logically consistent (arcs connect to nodes, etc.)

Spatial and attribute information
Data are submitted to StreamNet as tabular records (events) with Route IDs (LocationID), Fmeas (Begft), and Tmeas (Endft) attributes to identify locations on streams. These data events were referenced to the 1:100,000 PNW reach files (Based on LLID) and an arc GIS coverage was created based on these events. Each Arc in this GIS coverage represents fish distribution.

This is the forth version of this 1:100,000 distribution coverage (compiled Winter 2001) which incorporates updates/corrections to the data by ODFW. Previous anadromous distribution data (1998) was at the 1:250,000 scale.
