Purpose: These data were developed for Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Region and the Pacific Fishery Management Council in support of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider the designation and conservation of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for Pacific Coast Groundfish. These data were consolidated and integrated in a GIS format to support spatially explicit groundfish habitat modelling and impacts assessment on a coastwide scale. Depth values were visually assessed by comparing to source contour data and shaded according to depth ranges. Several polygons found to have erroneous values were corrected. Logical_Consistency_Report: Data were provided without metadata, so data processing procedures used to create contours are unknown. Process_Step: Process_Description: (1) Project source contour lines to West Coast Albers projection (2) Due to the large size of the source contour data set and limitations of ArcInfo software, in order to further process the source contour data, we had to subset the contour lines into ten smaller coverages by depth. (Could not subset geographically because data were too large for ArcInfo topological functions, such as CLIP). Each depth subset had one overlapping contour line from the adjacent subset(s). (3) To further reduce the size of the data, we generalized the contour lines. Used ArcInfo GENERALIZE function with 150 meter weed tolerance, bendsimplify algorithm, and errorchecking (avoids creation of intersecting lines). Various weed tolerance distances were tested: 80, 100, 150, and 200 meters. 150 meters was the best compromise to significantly reduce the size of the data without significantly change the locations of the contour data. To avoid slivers due to overlap, the edge contours were replaced by the contours from adjacent subset coverages. (4) Each depth subset was clipped and merged with a box used to create an outer boundary for the depth zone polygons. (5) A series of AML programs were used to assign the depth values of the adjacent contour lines to the minimum and maximum depth attributes of each polygon. If the polygon had only one adjacent contour line, the adjacent/surrounding polygon was used to determine whether the inner polygon was a high or low point in the relief and the maximum or minimum depth zone value was assigned accordingly. (6) The ten depth polygon subset coverages were clipped into regional coverages for Northern, Central and Southern California. The depth subset coverages for each region were merged to create complete depth polygon coverages for each of the three regions. (7) A few polygons remained without correct minimum and maximum depth zone values. These values were assigned using CDFG bathymetry grid values and the ArcInfo LATTICESPOT function. (8) Generated 10-meter contours from DBDB grid for southern-most area in California, and created polygons from these contours. Appended the polygons for this area to CDFG depth polygons. (8) Checked that all polygons had maximum and minimum depth zone values that were exactly 10 meters apart. Several polygons were corrected manually in ArcEdit.
