Abstract:
These data depict historical west coast groundfish conservation areas, closed areas intended to protect a particular groundfish species or species group or species complex, that have been implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Purpose:
These data were developed for Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Region and the Pacific Fishery Management Council in support of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider the designation and conservation of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for Pacific Coast Groundfish. These data were consolidated and integrated in a GIS format to support spatially explicit groundfish habitat modelling and impacts assessment on a coastwide scale.

No formal attribute accuracy assesment was performed. Data for start and end dates were determined from the Federal Register or provided by Carrie Nordeen, NMFS, Northwest Region

Data were developed directly from tabular latitude/longitude coordinates. If conservation area included a shoreline, the shoreline from the EFH merged habitat data was used for consistency between EFH data layers. However, this shoreline is not consistent along the coast and is not an official NOAA shoreline.
