Dam Facilities (StreamNet, February 2010)

This feature layer is a spatial representation of most of the DAM facilities in the StreamNet database. Information about the location of each dam was collected from StreamNet personnel at WDFW (Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife), ODFW (Oregon Dept of Fish & Wildlife), IDFG (Idaho Dept of Fish & Game), and MFWP (Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks) and the tabular information about each dam in the StreamNet database was then added to each dam point in the GIS layer. California data comes from the StreamNet's partner project "CalFISH" (http://www.calfish.org) which contributes data compatible with the StreamNet database.

Data is intended for use in a variety of applications where location of and information about dams is important. Note that through a hyperlink field in the dataset (SNLINK) additional information can be retrieved related to a specific dam facility via StreamNet's Online Query System.

Limitations of the data: Dam locations were determined from linear referencing and/or longitude/latitude coordinates submitted by StreamNet personnel at the partner agencies. Longitude and latitude coordinates were generally determined to 4 decimal places (ie. long -123.5763, lat 44.2345) but may be less precise for some dams. California dam records originate from California Department of Fish and Game and StreamNet's partner project, CalFish (http://www.calfish.org). Facilities that lack coordinates OR linear referencing are excluded from this spatial dataset. Note that the Linear referencing information included (LOCATIONID, BEGFT, ENDFT) may be used to locate the dam facility on StreamNet's Regional Mixed Scale Hydrography data set (MSHv1).

StreamNet is a cooperative information management and dissemination project focused on fisheries and aquatic related data in the Columbia River basin and the Pacific Northwest. The project provides a variety of data related to fish resources and maintains the 1:100,000 scale hydrography layer for the Pacific Northwest. Information is available through the an on-line database query, interactive maps, direct data download or by custom request.

StreamNet receives funding from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA Project No.: 198810804) and is authorized under the Fish and Wildlife Program of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. Other organizations provide funding for select project components. Participating agencies contribute significant in-kind services and include: the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game (IDFG), Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fisheries Commission (CRITFC). The StreamNet project is managed by the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in Portland, Oregon.
